Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

We take a total communication approach to therapy which honors all forms of communication, such as: AAC device selections, speech, gestures, signs, and more. Our goal is to help your child say what they want to say and participate fully in life conversations and decisions. Our services include AAC assessment, support with obtaining high-tech AAC device funding, device fitting, AAC therapy, device customization, and training for parents, educators, family members, and other communication partners.

Assistive
Technology (AT)

Assistive Technology (AT) allows people to participate in activities and tasks that they may not be able to participate in otherwise. We conduct AT assessments, at home and/or at school, for children who think, learn, read, write, and communicate differently to identify the most effective tools for them to use when participating in academic, social, or recreational activities. Assistive Technologies can include support with communication (AAC), computer access technology, and technology for people with learning, physical, cognitive, and/or sensory disabilities.

Literacy

Reading and writing skills are essential for communication independence and social & academic success. We evaluate and treat literacy challenges using evidence-based practices informed by the latest research on developmental language disorders and dyslexia. Our goal is to establish and build on foundational language and reading skills while decreasing barriers to learning. We support and empower your child in gaining skills in the areas of alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness and processing, oral language, word recognition, decoding, spelling, reading fluency, and reading comprehension.

Language & Social Communication

We provide early intervention services and school-age therapy focusing on language, play, recreation, social interaction and development. Whether your child has trouble understanding what they are told, expressing themselves with words, playing with others, or making friends, we can support their growth with individualized activities to help them gain and practice new skills. Language and social communication therapy will help your child use new vocabulary words, follow directions, form complete and accurate sentences, communicate with other children and adults, and develop authentic relationships.

Parent & Caregiver Coaching

Caregivers are a child's most important teachers. We empower families to support language, communication, and social skills development at home and in the community. With the most up-to-date knowledge, tools, and strategies, you can help your child participate and succeed during their normal daily activities and routines!

AAC and Language Intensives

We offer seasonal intensive trainings to support families in becoming more comfortable with using AAC in their daily routines. We’ll spend time in your child’s natural environments, including your home, nearby park, and other community spaces. Intensives are offered in the California Bay Area or in/near Lawrence, KS, with options for 1-3 consecutive days at 2-3 hours per day.

MEET KARINA

Karina Saechao, M.A., CCC-SLP, ATACP

CEO, Speech-Language Pathologist
Assistive Technology Specialist

I am a creative, forward-thinking, and playful speech therapist with a passion for serving children and their families. As a holistic master clinician, I strive to make language, literacy, and communication fun and accessible through play and recreation. I believe that every child should be able to authentically communicate and receive an equitable education.  At Golden Oak Speech Therapy, I meet my families where they are - both literally and figuratively. I center the voices of parents in the therapy process by listening to their needs, goals, and dreams for their child in order to customize a therapy plan that truly changes their lives for the better. In addition to my 9+ years of clinical work, I am a Ph.D. candidate studying Child Language. When I am not working, studying, or researching, I can be found hanging out with my husband and dog, drinking something delightful, and enjoying time with my loved ones!
